Studies
following youth emancipating from the foster care system demonstrate
the failure of the system. Having emerged from a highly structured
environment, many are unable to function on their own. Very few young
people hit age eighteen and are immediately able to fully support
themselves financially and emotionally. How many of us are the safe
haven for adult children who raid the refrigerator, dump off their
laundry, and borrow money but consider themselves "on their own"?
Most of our emancipating young ladies have no such safety net. In
1999, to improve the for emancipating women, Crittenton Services opened
Stepping Stones-a transitional living program in Fullerton.

The
independent living program in Aspen Cottage is designed to specialize
in young ladies age 17 and up who need a "fast track"
program to independence. Focusing on life skills such as budgeting,
menu planning and meal preparation, and personal responsiblity,
Aspen will help prepare teens for independent living.

Adolescents
leaving the foster care system at age 18 are seldom ready to take
full responsiblity for their own care, let alone the care of an infant
or toddler. Many still have chemical dependency issues, psychological
issues, or parenting needs with no family resources to count on. We
have offered aftercare services in the past but have recently expanded
services to include assisted residential care in a single-family house.
Located in nearby Buena Park, Stepping Stones can accommodate up to
four young women ages 18 to 21 and up to four infants to toddlers.
Chemical dependency counseling, parenting classes, medical services,
and pregnancy prevention services are available fo residents of this
program. |
